Eviction Process Overview

A plain-English, high-level look at how the NYC eviction process generally works — so you know what to expect and when to call an attorney.

The General NYC Timeline

At a high level, the process generally moves from notice to petition to a court hearing, then to a judgment and, if granted, enforcement by a marshal. Timelines vary widely depending on the case and the court.

  • Court steps need an attorney. Filing and appearing in housing court require licensed legal counsel.
  • What we can coordinate. Documentation, communication, and post-judgment turnover of the unit.
  • Keep records ready. Lease, ledger, notices, and communications.
  • Timing matters. Talk to an attorney early; sometimes a self-cure is still realistic.
