Renters

How to spot a rental scam

2 min readUpdated Oct 2026
We search on your behalf. When you become a Mena Realty client, we look for apartments for you, based on your budget, your needs and any rental assistance program you use, and we guide you from application to keys. We register clients first so we know who we are working with and can explain our terms and any fees in writing before you commit. Under the FARE Act, you do not need to be our client to ask about an apartment a landlord has hired us to rent.

Warning signs

  • Never pay a deposit or fee before seeing the apartment and confirming who you are dealing with.
  • Be careful with requests for payment by gift card, wire transfer or cryptocurrency.
  • A rent far below what similar apartments cost is a warning sign.
  • Confirm a broker’s license with New York State before sharing documents. Every Mena Realty agent is licensed, and you are welcome to visit our office at 2675 Creston Avenue in the Bronx to confirm who you are dealing with.

How Mena Realty helps

Mena Realty Homes Corp. is a licensed real estate brokerage in the Bronx, helping renters across New York City since 2001. Our team speaks English and Spanish.

  • Every Mena Realty agent is licensed by New York State. Ask for the agent’s name and check it on the State’s license lookup.
  • You see or choose an apartment before you fill out a rental application.
  • We will never ask you to pay with gift cards or cryptocurrency.
